Police standoff in Millville, NJ ends in fatal shooting

MILLVILLE, N.J. (WPVI) -- A daylong police presence outside a home on Hazel Boulevard in Millville ended in a fatal shooting Thursday, according to the New Jersey Attorney General's Office.

Neighbors said officers arrived around 8 a.m. and described the situation as a standoff. A shattered window was visible from the street, one of the few signs of what may have unfolded inside the home.

Detectives continued entering and exiting the residence as late as 11 p.m.

Photos shared by a neighbor showed officers positioned behind the house earlier in the afternoon. A woman who asked not to be identified said she heard police speaking to a man inside through a loudspeaker.

"Just asking if they could come outside, show yourself, we just want to make sure you're OK, you're not in trouble -- those kinds of things," she said.

She said around 1 p.m., the situation had clearly changed.

"EMS department came very quickly after and then all the police officers came back outside," she said. "I don't want to say it calmed down, but the energy kind of shifted. I knew whatever happened, it was all done."

The attorney general's office said its Office of Public Integrity and Accountability is investigating an officer-involved shooting and confirmed that one adult male civilian died. Officials have not released the man's name or the name of the officer involved.

Neighbors say the man was in his 40s and lived in the home with his mother and girlfriend.

Marnie Woods, who lives nearby, said she felt "sorrow" after learning of the death.

"I didn't know them real well, but they took care of my animals when my house burned down," Woods said.

"Just traumatic and unexpected," Woods added. "I mean, they had problems. They'd play music loud or have arguments, but nothing like this. You never expect it in a million years."

The attorney general's office said the investigation remains ongoing and no additional details are being released at this time.
